What is skill development?

Skill India or the National Skill Development Mission of India is a skill development training initiative taken up by the government of India launched in July 2015. It was launched by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the coordination and development of skills throughout the country. It is meant to train over 40 crores Indian youth by the year 2022 so that they can use their skills to gain employment.

The rural and semi-urban areas of the country have a large pool of motivated, ambitious, and driven individuals who may not be able to put this drive into good use due to a lack of resources or opportunities. These individuals can contribute to the growth of the economy and fulfill their individual needs and goals all at the same time.

Having a job and a stable source of income is very empowering for these individuals, as they mostly earn a basic daily wage from working odd jobs. With the help of the Skill India initiative, they can learn skills that help them get a respectable job. The training provided by the government is free of cost and anyone between the ages of 15-35 is entitled to enter. One must be a citizen of the country for this.

Some of the campaigns under the initiative of Skill India include the following:

  • National Policy For Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, 2015
  • Skill loan scheme
  • Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana
  • National Skill Development Mission
  • Rural India Skill

AISECT has partnered with NSDC to provide training on vocational skills to the youth under a large number of sectors. For the purpose of skill training, AISECT is the leading partner with NSDC.

Here are some of the industries that AISECT provides training for:

  • Construction: By honing skills required for construction, the individuals can get jobs in construction sites for buildings, factories, etc.
  • Banking: Financial services like banking, insurance and others are included in this sector and enables an individual to get a stable job like a GST account assistant.
  • Electronics and hardware: This sector has a large amount of work, with a shortage of the number of people employed in it. More people getting trained in these fields can help bridge the gap between demand and supply. One can get jobs like that of a field technician.
  • Apparel: There are a large number of employment opportunities in both public and private sectors for the apparel industry. This is one of the industries that enables one to become self-employed. Some courses offered include sewing machine operation and self-employed tailoring courses.
  • Retail: Retail courses help people get jobs like retail sales associates.
  • Plumbing: Plumbing jobs are always going to be in demand as every office and household needs a plumber.
  • Green Jobs: These jobs include jobs that help use alternative sources of energy like solar and other green energy sources. The job of the Solar PV installer is a highly prestigious job that one can get after this training.

By enrolling in skill development initiatives, a candidate will ensure a brighter future for themselves and also contribute to the growth and development of the country’s economy. They will be empowered and provide a good livelihood for their families as well.
